Preparing the kids for bed

It has been a busy weekend, full of outdoor play for the kiddos.  To help them relax, recover and prepare for the week, I made them a special bath and bed time routine.

Buck (whom I've renamed BooBoo because of the amount of bumps and bruises he acquires in one day) had an especially productive day at the park with Mama Jean and Grandaddy; productive in the sense that he came how with even more "badges of honor".  What can I say, he's all boy.  So, to help soothe all the scrapes and rashes and help him relax, he had an oatmeal bath and wash.

It is very simple and easy.  First I chopped up some oats in the blender.  I took half of this and made a paste with milk.  The remainder I put in his warm bath water. While he was in the tub, I used the oatmeal paste as a cleanser on a washcloth.  After the bath, I rubbed my relaxing massage oil on his legs, arms and back.  I did the same with Beauty.

What is your relaxing massage oil, you may ask.  Again, very simple.
Fill a small, decorative bottle with grapeseed oil and add 3 or 4 drops of lavender essential oil.  The grapeseed oil is an excellent source of vitamin e, not to mention softens and moisturizes the skin. The lavender releases a wonderful, calming aroma.

What are some things you do to help the kids unwind?

  1. Wow. Your kids are lucky! To think I was still just using band aids:) I'd heard about oatmeal in a batch; this is the first time someone suggested chopping it up in a blender, first...great idea!

  2. What?! You can make an oatmeal bath from scratch? I calmed down just reading this. How nice. My son unwinds when I say he can leave the light on for a few minutes. When I check on him 5 minutes later he is snoring. Something about the light off he will call me twenty times before he settles down.

  3. You are AMAZING! I'm going to try this. I'll sing or read to my kids. I have four now, though, and it's getting tough finding time. Putting everyone to sleep can take forever lately lol

  4. I love this idea, especially when they are all wound up! The only time I remember an oatmeal bath is when my sisters and I had the chickenpox. I love the idea of using it as a scrub for the body. Your kids are lucky to have such a kind and smart mommy!! Thanks for the suggestions!

  5. I love the idea of having a special routine for Sunday nights to get ready to start the new week. I'm going to have to think about what we could do to make that evening relaxing and special. Thanks for a great idea!
